Support · Speech with Me

Ask us anything.

Speech with Me is made by one person, and that person answers the mail. If something is broken, confusing, or missing — or you just want to ask whether the app does a particular thing — write to us and you will get a real reply.

1 · Contact

How to reach us

Email is the only support channel, and it is read by the developer directly — there is no ticket queue and no bot in front of it. Questions, bug reports, feature requests, privacy and data requests, and anything about the coach's behaviour all go to the same address.

2 · Reporting a problem

What to put in your message

The more of this you can include, the more likely the first reply is a fix rather than a question:

  • The app version. Open the app menu and choose About Speech with Me — the version number is shown there.
  • Your macOS version and Mac model. Apple menu ▸ About This Mac.
  • What happened, and what you expected instead. One or two plain sentences is enough.
  • Where it happened — the Chat, Learning, or Settings screen — and what you did just before it.
  • Whether it happens every time or only occasionally.
  • Any message the app showed you, copied out or screenshotted.
  • If it is about setup: whether the first-run coach download had finished, and which coach model you have selected in Settings.

You never need to send us recordings or transcripts, and we will not ask for them. Everything you say to the coach stays on your Mac, and support does not need it to diagnose a problem.

3 · Coach replies

Reporting something the coach said

The coach is an AI model running on your own machine, and like any AI it can be wrong, unhelpful, or occasionally say something it should not. If a reply is inappropriate or a correction is plainly incorrect, tell us: the app's About panel has a Report a coach reply link that opens an email with the subject already filled in, or you can simply write to the address above.

Reports of this kind are read individually and are what the coach's wording and safety rules get tuned from. Paste in the reply if you are comfortable doing so — nothing is sent automatically, so we only ever see what you choose to include.

4 · Common questions

Before you write, these may cover it

Does anything I say leave my Mac?

No. Speech recognition, the AI coach, and the voice you hear back all run on your own machine. Your recordings, transcripts, and conversations are never uploaded to us. The one exception is one you have to switch on yourself: if you choose to configure an external provider such as OpenAI or Google Gemini with your own API key, the text you practise is sent from your Mac to that provider under their terms. That option is off by default.

What do I need to run it?

An Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 14 or later. The standard coach runs on 8 GB of memory; the larger coach models need more.

Why does it download something the first time I open it?

The app ships without the AI model, so the first launch fetches the on-device coach — 2.4 GB for the standard model, once. After that it works offline. Larger, more capable coaches (8.3 GB and 17.2 GB) are optional and are only fetched if you pick one in Settings. The app itself installs at about 1.3 GB. If a download stalls, quitting and reopening the app restarts it; if it keeps failing, write to us.

Does it work offline? Do I need an account?

Once the coach model has been downloaded, yes — practice works with the network off. The App Store version has no sign-in and no account at all: everything the app does is available immediately.

How do I delete my data?

In the app, go to Settings ▸ Privacy and use Delete All My Data. That erases what the app has stored on your own computer — your conversations, transcripts, saved words, and history. It is a local action, and it is immediate. If you also want the anonymous usage records described below removed, email us and we will do it.

What analytics does the app send, and can I turn them off?

With analytics on, the app sends a random identifier created on your Mac, a session identifier, your macOS version, your Mac model, the app version, and event names such as “app opened”. It never includes anything you say or type. It is described on the consent screen shown before first use, and you can switch it off at any time in Settings ▸ Privacy.

Which languages and levels does it support?

Seven languages, and six CEFR bands from A1 to C2 — plus an adaptive “Any” mode that mirrors however you actually speak. You can also adjust the coach's tone, from clear no-jokes teaching to a warm and playful one, in Settings.

What is the phone companion, and is it safe?

It is an optional feature that lets a phone on your own Wi-Fi talk to the coach running on your Mac. It ships off, you arm it deliberately, and it is protected by a pairing code. That traffic stays on your own network — it does not go out to the internet or to us.

How accurate is the coaching?

The coach is a language model, and its scores and corrections are its judgement rather than a certified assessment. It is good practice, not an exam result — do not rely on it for anything critical without checking. If you see a correction that is simply wrong, that is worth reporting.

5 · Privacy

What we do with your data

The short version: the app is local-first, and the things you create with it stay on your device. The full policy — what limited non-content data we handle, who processes it, how long it is kept, and your rights to access or erase it — is published here:
